Premium Chocolate Products – Top of Europe
The Jungfrau Railways are the most important mountain railway company in Switzerland. But in addition to cogwheel and cable cars, the Swiss company also operates its own confectionery. Hans Brunner GmbH has had the privilege in recent years to realize several exclusive chocolate projects, supplying Jungfrau Railways with the casting molds for their chocolate bars and the specialty “Eigerspitzli.”
The “Eigerspitzli” were invented in 1990. They are available in milk and dark chocolate, with the “snow” of the Eiger made from an egg-white mixture. While the milk chocolate version contains cognac in the filling, the dark one features cherry brandy. “We used to produce the Eigerspitzli at the Eiger Glacier, but since the end of 2020, they have been made at the Grindelwald Terminal,” explains Mario Friso, Head of F&B at Jungfrau Gastronomie AG.
The batch size for producing the chocolate bars depends on the season, with a peak in March/April for the summer season. “As a rule, we produce in large quantities for longer shelf life at two different production sites,” says Mario Friso. The bars made of milk and white chocolate are produced at the Eiger Glacier, while those made of dark chocolate are cast at the Grindelwald Terminal. In 2023, the image on the bar was updated: after more than two decades featuring sled dogs from the Eiger Glacier, the Sphinx now adorns the chocolate bars. Around 31,000 bars are sold each year.
